The 'Francis Rivis' is a medium-sized deciduous climber with narrow, serrate leaflets. It has slightly twisted, purple-blue flowers from mid- to late spring and are followed by seedheads, which cover the plant later in the year. It is one of the easiest clematis to look after as it needs little or no pruning.
